Questions about Russia and Protests

What consequences did the activist band Pussy Riot face because of their performance at Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour?
Who is Putin, and why do some Russians love him while others hate him?
Do you agree with Pussy Riot’s form of protest? Do you agree with the punishment that Pussy Riot received?

The members were imprisoned for 2 years for hooliganism

Putin is the new Russian president, most people seem to like him, he is a lot younger than the other president, he is in office on a daily basis, he is healthy, he has worked with many investors at St. Petersburg and therefore he has experience in dealing with nitty-gritty things.

I personally do not agree with their form of protest, I think it was stupid but I suppose that they certainly got the attention I’m assuming they were aiming for. I do not agree with the punishment they received I believed that it was too harsh I mean it’s not like they killed someone I think they shouldn’t have been sent to jail at all, community service or something of that nature would have been a much better punishment.

  2. 1. For the action of the Band Pussy Riot; I believe the consequence was a 2 year sentence to jail.

    2. Putin was a president of Moscow who protects the Russian state firms after the Gazprom Robe. He set some though rules to protect the Russian state firms. It was brought up that strategic Russian companies will not change pricings of contracts or disclose information without the approval of the government. I believe that people like Putin because he was in the right set of mind in protecting the federation, whereas some people don’t like the idea of asking permission.

    3. I believe it was not right to have the riot in the church and the fact that the band created a prayer of some sort; was a little inappropriate. There is a fine line of disliking someone and then there is pushing it to crazy. I believe The Pussy Riot could have taken things more maturely maybe they did deserve jail time, depending on weather the church still plays a huge role and have the power to punish them. But also it would be considered uncooperative and unreasonable with the poilice.

The band members of Pussy Riot were arrested because of their performance, on “charges of hooliganism”. They received a two year prison sentence because of this.

2.Who is Putin, and why do some Russians love him while others hate him?
The majority of Russians love Putin. In the latest election, which took place on March 4th, 2012, Putin received 63.64% of the votes. In the 1990’s, crime was on the rise in Russia. Putin brought back tougher laws which helped jail or exile the criminals. Many people believed that this was a great thing because the crime rate lowered. He also gives a lot of money to keep social services in Russia open. Putin is also a very honest man. He’s not afraid to speak his mind, which many Russians like and respect him for as a leader of their country. There are also the people in Russia who do not like Putin. He was a KGB officer, which many people despise him for. Many people in Russia also believe that they do not have enough freedom. They want more freedom of speech. Some Russians see Putin as more of a “want-to-be dictator.” They believe that “Putin’s system is failing,” and that, “
it is not suited for the 21st century.” He is also demeaning towards women, which makes him disliked.

3.Do you agree with Pussy Riot’s form of protest? Do you agree with the punishment that Pussy Riot received?
Pussy Riot called their form of protest “art”. I believe that writing and performing a song, taking a video of the performance, and then posting it to Youtube is a very modern way to protest. With social media being such a huge part of today’s society, videos get shared on the web all over the world. So the form of protest, which was very daring, worked rather well for Pussy Riot since they got so many people talking about it. A two year prison sentence is harsh for a punishment. They didn’t commit a serious crime. All they did, was perform a controversial song in a church. They did deserve some type of punishment though, like a fine or something.

  4. Q1 Response : On March 3rd 2012, two of the activists from the performance; Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, were arrested. On March 15th Yekaterina Samutsevich was also arrested and charged for hooliganism. Until the end of July, all three girls were kept in custody because they were denied their bails. Their trials finished on August 17th and concluded their conviction of hooliganism. The three girls face a sentence of 2 years of jail time because of their actions of protest against the Orthodox Church’s support for Putin.

Q2 Response: Vladimir Putin has been the president of Russia since May 7th 2012, (has also served as the Russian president in previous years). Some Russians may love him because he has created some progress for the country. For example, Russia has had some economic gain as well as more 'purchasing power'. The Russian Patriarch had said that Putin was a “miracle from God” and he had changed the “crooked path of history”, after his re-election in 2012. On the other hand, the members of Pussy Riot said that the Russian president was “a man who is as far as can be from God’s truth.” Many others hate Putin because they believe that he did not create economic stability, he just simply multiplied sales of their natural resources. However if oil prices drop or there is not as big of a demand for it, the economy will, once again, explode. There is also talk that Putin may abolish all forms of free education for the children of Russia as well as cutting social payments and pensions.

Q3: I’m not sure if I do agree with Pussy Riot’s form of protest. It is very unusual and something you don’t hear of all the time, which is good to get people’s attention. However I don’t think protesting in the Church was necessary because they only stated an opinion. With that said, Pussy Riot is also sharing how they feel about Putin’s re-election, through their performances. Therefore I do think they should be punished slightly to tame chaos and such, yet their sentence is a little much.
